World Standards Day – 14th October 2010

World Standards Day is celebrated each year on 14 October to pay tribute to the efforts of thousands of experts worldwide who collaborate within IEC, ISO and ITU to develop voluntary International Standards that facilitate trade, spread knowledge and disseminate technological advances.

The theme of this year’s World Standards Day message is “Standards make the world accessible for all”. With at least 650 million people globally affected by some kind of disability, combined with the rising numbers of older people in the world’s population – one quarter of all citizens are 60 or older– the issue of accessibility to products and services has become more important than ever.

ISO’s customer focus highlighted in annual report

Demonstrating ISO’s commitment to meeting or exceeding customer needs is the key message of the recently published ISO Annual Report 2009. ISO’s customers are the 162 members of the organization and the myriad of stakeholders that develop, use or rely on ISO standards worldwide.

“Building a strong community of satisfied customers has been a key goal since its creation over 60 years ago,” the report states. “ISO looks for innovative ways to leverage customer satisfaction and events in 2009 highlight that ISO not only satisfies its broad customer base, but its end product – a suite of globally relevant International Standards – continues to drive growth in today’s volatile markets.”

New edition of ‘ISO 9001 for Small Businesses’

The International Standards Organisation and the International trade centre have recently published a new edition of the ISO 9001 for Small Businesses, providing an updated look into how small to medium sized businesses can understand the need for quality management systems, whilst explaining how to implement the requirements of the standard.

The new edition has been modified to include all adjustments made to the most recent ISO 9001:2008 standard. Written by a group of experts on the certification the handbook is a useful tool to any small business when it comes to taking the first steps toward certification.

Toyoda Shrinks World’s Biggest Carmaker for Quality Control

Akio Toyoda, who took over Toyota Motor Corp. less than a year ago, is shrinking the world’s largest carmaker to regain control over quality as record recalls give General Motors Co. and Ford Motor Co. an opportunity to win back customers.

Toyota’s decision to stop U.S. production and sales of eight models to fix defective accelerator pedals may cost the company as much as 100 billion yen ($1.1 billion) in operating profit a month, according to Koji Endo, managing director of Advanced Research Japan in Tokyo. The models accounted for about 1 million deliveries last year, more than half of Toyota’s 1.5 million vehicle sales edge over Volkswagen AG.

Do you comply with the legislation governing air conditioning?

It is now a legal requirement that air conditioning systems containing more than 3KG of ozone-depleting substances are tested for leaks at least annually, and more frequently for larger systems.

If your stationary refrigeration and air-conditioning system, of any type, contains 30kg or more of ODS you must test for leaks at least once every six months.

If your stationary refrigeration and air-conditioning equipment contains 300kg or more of ODS you must test for leaks at least once every three months.

If you find a leak you must repair it within 14 days. You must re-check your system for leaks within one month of repairing a leak.
